TRANSPORT IN HANOI
Hoang Van Chi

I've lived in Hanoi for 2 months only but there is a problem that I've met every day, it's traffic.
Most office workers go to work by motorbikes, most pupils and students go to work by bicycles or by buses. Some others travel by cars. They alsmost start or finish work at the same time, therefore, it's very busy in the early morning and in the late afternoon.
On the main streets in rush hours, traffic jam usually happens. The streets are so crowded that it's very difficult to move or even cross the streets. People are in the traffic jam just wait and wait until police officer come and solve the problem. They often come back home late.
Traffic is really a problem for not only Hanoi but also for other big cities.

I usually live in Halong with my family, but now I'm living in Hanoi to study in Hanoi University. After a month living here I think traffic is one of the most urgent problems in Hanoi.
Hanoi is always crowded with many transport means such as bicycles, motorbikes, cars, etc. Many people in Hanoi travel by motorbikes. In rush hours, streets are all motorbikes standing still, the engines are still running, the air is full of fumes and dirt. Some people ride their motorbikes very carelessly, therefore, traffic jam becomes worse and worse. Many students in Hanoi choose buses. This kind of transportation are more and more popular in Hanoi. It helps reducing the number of traffic vehicles on the street, therefore, reducing traffic jam, too.
Travel in Hanoi sometimes is quite dangerous to old people. So one of the safest choices is taxi. They are now very popular with people and the cost is quite reasonable.
Another problem that traffic causes in Hanoi is pollution. The environment is spoiled by not only fumes, dust, but also noises of thousands of motorbikes and cars running at the same time on the street.

I've lived in Hanoi for one year and I've seen many differences between transport in Hanoi and other cities.

Firstly, there are so many buses in Hanoi which carry thousands of passengers everyday. People of every jobs, students, teachers, officers, etc. travel by buses. Bus drivers sometimes drive carelessly and fast, the buses are usually old and uncomofortable. But many people choose them because they have no other choices. So the number of buses is not enough for all.

Secondly, Hanoi has a lot of motorbikes. They are not too expensive to most people nowadays. Moreover, they are quite convenient and easy to go in the city so, therefore, most people in Hanoi have at least one. That is one reason which causes traffic jam in Hanoi. I myself have one, but I don't like to use it very much.

The next transport means which I want to mention is train. I like to travel by train from one city to another because it is not so crowded and passengers can enjoy the air from outside.
